Born in Cameron, Missouri on June 17, 1912, Don Gillis moved with his family to Texas in 1930. He went on to have some impact on nearly every institution of higher education in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, as well as the University of South Carolina. Bernstein met Thomas Wolfe in 1925 on a voyage between Europe and New York. Wolfe and Bernstein, the wife of a prominent New York stock broker and 18 years older than Wolfe, became lovers in Oct. 1925 and remained so for the next five years.
